What is Polypropylene?
Polypropylene is fast becoming one of the most popular rug materials on the market. A synthetic, man made fibre, polypropylene rugs are designed to mimic more expensive natural fibres such as silk and wool.
During construction the fibres are heat set, whereby two or more yarn fibres are twisted together and then heated to ensure the yarns remain joined, permitting greater design flexibility and appearance. Once made, these fibres are machine woven into rugs that are designed for superior comfort and resilience, making them versatile rugs that can be used both indoors and outdoors. This fibre creates the easiest care rug option available; being colour fast (fade resistant), stain and spill resistant, non shed, easy to clean and perfect for all areas.
Can I use my rug outdoors?
Unlike natural fibres, a polypropylene is well-suited to the outdoors it is a water resistant fibre that will not grow mildew or fade when exposed to outdoor elements, making it an excellent choice for outdoor spaces or indoor areas where frequent spills occur.
Typically, outdoor rugs are used for covered entertaining areas like an alfresco or covered deck and while they are spill and stain resistant, these rugs are not waterproof so ongoing exposure to the elements can eventually cause the fibres to break down or fade.
Cleaning your polypropylene rug
Regular vacuuming prevents dirt, dust, and debris from settling deep into the rug fibres. Vacuum your polypropylene rug once a week.
As with any rug, stains should be treated as quickly as possible. The longer a stain sits on any rug material the more difficult it is to get out. Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel with water. Make sure to blot from the outside of the stain in and avoid rubbing. For solid stains, scrape away as much debris as possible before blotting with water and a clean cloth. Vacuum afterward.
Always remember to check the manufacturer’s directions first before spot cleaning any stain.
A polypropylene rug can be washed outside with a garden hose (using a few drops of dishwashing liquid if required) and left to air dry over the clothesline. Avoid placing your rug in direct sunlight.
