Choosing the right rug size can make or break the look and feel of your room. Whether you're styling a living room, dining space, bedroom or hallway, a well-sized rug helps define the space, add comfort underfoot and pull your entire design together.
At Simple Style Co., we’re here to make rug shopping easy. This guide will help you choose the ideal size for your room and layout, with clear measurements (in centimetres) and expert tips to get it right.
General Rug Sizing Tips
Before you buy your next rug, here’s a simple trick: use masking tape to outline the rug size on your floor. This will help you visualise the dimensions in your space and avoid a rug that's too small (the most common mistake!)
Our most popular rug sizes include: 225x155cm, 230x160cm, 290x200cm, 320x230cm, 330x240cm, 400x300cm
Living Room Rug Sizes
A well-sized living room rug should anchor your furniture, not float in the middle of the room. Aim to have the rug extend at least 20–30cm past the edge of your sofa. Ideally, the front legs of your couch and chairs should sit on the rug.
-
Small living rooms: 225x155cm or 230x160cm for smaller seating areas
-
Medium living rooms: 290x200cm or 320x230cm works well under a standard 3-seater + armchairs
-
Large living rooms: 330x240cm or 400x300cm for open-plan spaces with larger lounges or modular sofas
Dining Room Rug Sizes
In the dining area, your rug should be big enough to fit the table and all chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. As a rule of thumb, choose a rug that is at least 50cm wider than your table on each side.
-
4-seater table: 225x155cm or 230x160cm
-
6-seater table: 290x200cm
-
8-10 seater table: 330x240cm or 400x300cm
This helps prevent chairs from catching on the edge of the rug, ensuring a smoother, safer dining experience.
Bedroom Rug Sizes
A rug in the bedroom adds warmth and softness, especially when you step out of bed in the morning. To keep things balanced:
-
Your rug should not go under your bedside tables
-
Leave at least 50cm of rug at the foot of the bed
Recommended rug sizes:
-
Queen bed: 290x200cm, 320x230cm or 330x240cm
-
King bed: 330x240cm or 400x300cm
-
Double bed: 225x155cm (side placement) or 230x160cm (under the lower 2/3 of the bed)
You can also use two smaller rugs (one on either side) for a symmetrical look in smaller spaces.
Hallway & Runner Rug Sizes
Runner rugs are perfect for adding style and softness to long, narrow spaces. A good rule of thumb is to choose a runner that covers at least 75% of the hallway's length, leaving a small border on each end.
-
For a 3m hallway: choose a 240–270cm runner
-
For longer hallways: look for 300x80cm, 400x80cm, or 500x80cm runners
Tip: Keep the runner centred with equal space on both sides for a polished look.
Bonus Tips for Choosing the Right Rug Size
-
Measure your space before you shop
-
Think about furniture placement and room function
-
Use painter’s tape to visualise dimensions
And remember: when in doubt, go bigger. A slightly larger rug will always look more intentional and elevate the entire room.
